Jamaal
Magloire - Mas Band Leader
Toronto Revellers' founder Jamaal Magloire
was born and raised in Toronto. After
a successful high school career, Jamaal
accepted an athletic scholarship for the
University of Kentucky where he developed
a solid game and impressive statistics
on the court; he was drafted to the NBA
in 2000. In 2004 he was named to the NBA
All-Star team. He is now in his tenth
NBA season, and currently playing for
the Miami Heat.
Off the court, Jamaal is active in
supporting a number of community causes
and charities that provide youth with
a positive alternative to gangs and
drugs. In 2005, he started the Magloire
Basketball Association (JAMBA). JAMBA
endeavors to help boys and girls play
basketball at a high level and at the
same time teach them that they can achieve
their goals on and off the court.
Jamaal is very well known in the Caribbean
community as an individual who is deeply
involved and takes great pride in his
Trinidadian culture. In 2003 Jamaal
entered into a partnership which would
lead him to years of active participation
in Toronto's annual Caribana™
Parade. Through this experience he gained
further interest in mas' band production,
and in the summer of 2006 he entered
his first competitive band in the parade,
placing 5th overall; no minor feat for
a first year mas' band.
Not one to be satisfied with just a
taste of the pie, set his sights on
achieving first place, and did just
that in 2007 with the theme Viva Las
Vegas. Toronto Revellers again won Caribana's
highly coveted Band of the Year title
in 2008 for its presentation of Alkebulan
– Beyond the Nile.
In 2009 Toronto Revellers placed a respectable
3rd with Brazil – Bacchanal in
Rio.
For 2010 Toronto Revellers will again
take aim for the
#1 spot with Disco Fever – Ain't
No Stoppin Us Now!
Jamaal’s slogan is “Toronto
Revellers is the people’s band.”
No matter what race, creed or colour,
Toronto Revellers’ represent all
of the great people of Toronto!
