Whole foods are foods that are as close to their natural state as possible. These foods are full of essential vitamins and minerals that can help protect our bodies from chronic diseases like heart disease, stroke, some cancers and diabetes. Whole foods are also full of proteins, enzymes, phytonutrients and complex carbohydrates. The best whole foods we can choose are the locally grown fruits and vegetables. The term organic is sometimes confused with the term whole foods but "whole foods are not necessarily organic, nor are organic foods necessarily whole." (www.wikipedia.org)

Eating whole foods is important for everyone, but mostly for children. First, children are more vulnerable to pesticides, fertilizers and hormones. Also, it's very important to start your child on the right foods to ensure that they continue eating healthy foods into adulthood. Be aware, raw milk is

 
 

considered a whole food, however "health experts don't recommend that kids drink raw milk that hasn't be pasteurized. Kids should avoid unpasteurized fruit juices, including unpasteurized apple juice and apple cider."(www.about.com)

be controlled through diet.

Many whole foods have a low-glycemic index. Eating them throughout the day to substitute high-sugar or high-salt snacks will benefit your body tremendously. Visit your local grocery or farmers market and buy wholefoods for your diet today
