In North America, western sushi is the most popular. California roll, dynamite roll, caterpillar roll, rainbow roll, spider roll, salmon roll, crunchy roll and seattle roll all fall under the category of western sushi. All sushi uses rice as a base and compliments with other ingredients. This "internationally known sushi was invented by Hanaya Yohei, at the end of the Edo period in Edo (the former name of the Japanese capital, Tokyo). The sushi invented by Hanaya was an early form of fast food that was not fermented (therefore
prepared quickly) and could be eaten with one's hands roadside or in a theatre." (www.wikipedia.org)

Sushi is a great moderate calorie snack. Per roll (not each piece), the popular California Roll has less than 300 calories, however the Shrimp Tempura Roll can put you just over 500 calories. Be aware of what your eating and at what time of the day. Sashimi is the sliced raw fish by itself, without the

 
 

rice. Sushi is a healthful food. Sushi, like many fish contain omega-3 fatty acids. Sushi is also high in protein and low in fat. DHA and EPA are two healthy Omega-3 fatty acids. "Also remember that your nervous system (brain, spinal cord and all nerve sheaths) is mostly DHA, an Omega-3 fatty acid. The body is constantly in need of repairing and replenishing itself, so the consumption of Omega-3 fatty acids is critical to maintaining proper nervous system health." (www.sushifaq.com)

A lot of times, when you purchase sushi in a to-go container, it is served with ginger. The reason this is done, is to cleanse your mouth while your eating the sushi. Another reason, ginger has microbial properties which help in counteracting the theroy of any parasites that could be obtained from
consuming raw, blanched fish. Generally, the fish used in sushi is tuna, salmon, crab sticks or prawns. Be aware that time, freezing, heat, microwaving can all contribute in losing nutrients in our foods.

Wasabi (that hot green stuff) is another thing that you can find beside your california rolls in your to-go container. "Wasabi comes from the root of the plant wasabia japonicum and is extremely hot."
(www.yourtotalhealth.ivillage.com) You usually don't consume too much wasabi, so you don't really have to worry about your caloric intake here. Wasabi in Japanese cuisine can be compared to horseradish in American cuisine.

My advice is to eat your sushi early in the day...like 11am or noon. Why? If you notice...by the time 3pm rolls around, the sushi is at a discounted price! Coincidence? I think not!
