DJ
Finn

Music: Everything
The
artist known as Finn has constantly
been presented with the same question,
"Why do they call you Finn?".
The answer is simple. No gimmicks,
no acronyms, or complex analogies.
Finn is simply his last name. To
understand where hes going you need
to know where hes been. Finn was
born in North York General Hospital
on November 14th in 1980 to parents
of Jamaican descent.
He
is the middle child of his fathers
three children, and the second youngest
of his mothers four children. His
love for music goes as far back
as he can remember. The first birthday
gift he ever received was the vinyl
of Michael Jacksons "Thriller"
album on his 1st birthday. At age
of 10 he would DJ at numerous family
functions while standing on a milk
crate so he could see over the turntables.
His family then migrated to the
west-end of the GTA to the city
of Brampton in the early 90s.
The
fact that he was new to the city
and had little friends at first,
Finn was constantly tagging along
with his older brother and cousin.
They were always playing Hip-Hop
and it naturally became his music
of choice. With his fathers turntables
which were a far cry from the DJ
standard Technics 1200s at the time,
Finn began honing his skills as
a DJ.
He
can vividly remember the first mix
he ever successfully blended, which
was Method Man's "Release Yo
Delf" with Channel Lives "Mad
Izm" featuring KRS ONE. He
then started making mix tapes for
some of his friends and also DJing
at local parties under the name
DJ Finn. Finn would also mix instrumentals
while his friends would record their
freestyles.
In
the late nineties he lost the passion
for DJing because the price of Vinyl
and the fact that it wasnt making
him enough money to support the
hobby. He officially stopped buying
vinyl in approximately the year
2000. Being that music was always
a dream of his, he then got together
with two of his high school friends
and they put their money together
and bought an Akai MPC 2000XL in
December of 2003.
Adding
one more partner the four young
entrepreneurs started a company
called uNORTHodox Entertainment.
A business that was slated to be
an entertainment company, which
throws parties, shows and other
events, as well as a record label
with a band of artists in which
the founders grew up with. Finn
was supposed to be in-house producer,
while the others would carry the
load of being recording artists.
He
would sit in his basement pounding
on the pads of the MPC, sometimes
making five or six beats per day.
He made beats for almost a full
year before anything had been recorded
vocally, and one day "it"
happened. Though it was never in
his plans to be a rapper, Finn did
do some song writing over some of
his beats. One afternoon he was
going to the studio with an artist
from the label to record the very
first song on one of his beats.
Something told him to bring one
of the songs he wrote and the beat
he wrote it on. Finn instantly became
addicted to the rush of being in
the booth. Since then you cant get
him out of the studio.
He
has recorded over 60 songs and produced
over 100 songs. His unique voice
and vivid imagination coupled with
the wordplay of an English professor
makes Finn a name to look out for.
The fact that hes not afraid to
step outside the box is evident
throughout his early discography.
"I constantly try to challenge
myself to write songs about things
Ive never heard in a song. If someone
can relate to your song, they will
appreciate it more" says Finn.
The drive and passion of this young
artist/producer/CEO is slowly but
surely inserting himself into the
urban music scene in the GTA.
He
has worked with a number of up and
coming artists as well as performing
alongside some of the citys veterans.
uNORTHodox Entertainment released
their first official project produced
in entirety by Finn called "Overproof
R.U.M." in July of 2005. As
a tribute to a lot of the artists
that Finn grew up listening to,
the entire CD was produced using
samples from 70s and 80s reggae
music. The album/mix tape has sold
over 2000 copies and was said by
many to be the best Canadian Mix-tape
of 2005.
The
many accomplishments under his belt
just add fuel to the fire. There
are many tricks up his sleeve for
the near future including his first
commercial radio single which was
also produced by him. The ability
to appeal to the ladies as well
as the streets is the one skill
that he admits will be the key to
his success. Music is definitely
one of the most important things
in his life and he truly believes
that it is his calling in life.
Hes determined to make meaningful
music and use it as personal therapy
as well as therapy for his listeners.
When asked what he would do if he
was to fail at making music his
profession, he calmly answers, "Failure
is not an option".
